Hand Block Print Dresses
Our block print dresses are made the slow way: each pattern is hand carved into a wooden block, then pressed onto natural cotton by skilled artisans, one row at a time. That handwork gives every hand block print dress small variations in color and line, so no two are exactly alike. Our fair trade partners in India have practiced this craft for generations, including the centuries-old Ajrakh block printing tradition. Choose from tiered, midi and maxi silhouettes in original prints designed in Chicago, many with pockets. Looking for more? Shop our full collection of block print clothing, including tops and skirts.
What is a block print dress?
A block print dress is made from fabric that’s printed by hand using carved wooden blocks dipped in dye. Artisans press the blocks onto the cloth one section at a time to build the pattern, which gives each piece a slightly unique, handmade look.
How do I care for a block print dress?
Hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent, then line or flat dry. Hand printed dyes can soften over time, so avoid the dryer and wash with similar colors.
Are your block print dresses fair trade?
Yes. Every Mata Traders dress is made by fair trade partners who provide safe working conditions, fair wages and long-term partnerships.
Is every print one of a kind?
Because each piece is printed by hand, expect small variations in color and alignment. That’s the mark of real block printing, not a flaw.
